Flowers, Travel, and Memories

Flowers, Travel, and Memories

Flowers can enhance your travel memories in many ways. There you are, visiting the Spanish Colonial city of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico and the blooming jacaranda trees surrounding the buildings and throughout the plazas are so striking, they take your breath away. Or you are in Tokyo in April and come across the Kameido Tenjin Shrine covered with 100 wisteria plants on 15 trellises that were planted 320 years ago. At either location, the perfumed air and the lavender-colored light from so many purple flowers will create a scene you’ll never forget.

In fact, flowers can greatly impact what we remember from our travels. Visually, their individual beauty can provide delightful mental triggers to refresh our memories of a trip: it could be a single blossom on a Saguaro cactus in Arizona or a pink Jersey lily in the Channel Isles or the impact of a mass of color, such as heather on the moors in Scotland, a lavender field before harvest, or a field of pink opium poppies in Tasmania.

In some locations, unique geological areas are accented or highlighted by wildflowers. Places with dramatic scenery, such as Iceland, South Africa, Australia, and the moors of Britain, have thick carpets of seasonal flowers that not only frame the landscape but seem to soften its edges.

Other places serve as a backdrop to area flowers. The presence of flowers adds visual significance to the site: the anemones blooming amid the ruins in the Karpaz Peninsula in Cypress; frankincense trees located in a rocky Wadi outside Salalah, Oman; Darwin’s cotton trees on Isabella Island in the Galapagos; and dogwood trees blooming among the giant sequoias in California’s Sierra Mountains.

Our nose offers another effective travel memory trigger. The aroma that fills the air—a plaza of blooming orange trees in southern Spain, the “pizza” scented hills of Crete, a coffee plantation in Costa Rica, or Turkey’s commercial fields of roses grown for their oil—provides a powerful reminder of the entire trip when we’re exposed to that fragrance again.

A perfect example of all of these memory stimulants is the Burren on Ireland’s mid-western coast. Definitely dramatic, the Burren offers a unique combination of environment and flora. Picture this: the Gulf Stream determines the weather on the great limestone plateau which allows both Mediterranean and arctic wildflowers to grow together in one natural landscape. Plants common to the southern regions reach their northern limits and plants common to the northern regions reach their southern limits. And alpine plants are growing here at sea-level. It’s like one-stop shopping for flower lovers!

Travelling With Kids

Travelling With Kids
By Denny Phillips
Article Word Count: 620 [View Summary] Comments (0)

I am sure that many of us have heard horror stories about being cooped up in a car or airplane for hours at a time with cranky kids. "Are we there yet?" "How much longer?" "Megan is 'looking' at me!" "I have to go to the bathroom--RIGHT NOW!" There are endless instances when children can get on our nerves when travelling. Here are a few tips that may help soften the travel woes...

Create a TRAVEL SURVIVAL KIT packed with small travel toys and games. Use a bright back-pack or tote bag dedicated to the purpose. Include age-appropriate toys, such as an etch-a-sketch for preschool drawing fun, magnetic letter board for a toddler, sticker, puzzle or joke books for a grade-schooler. Interactive games can keep siblings happy-like Brain Quest cards with age-appropriate puzzles and questions, or even a simple deck of playing cards. Nowadays, portable DVD players and hand-held video games can keep kids trouble-free and occupied for hours. If you do take electronic things like a Game-Gear, be sure to take extra batteries.

Snacks can be healthy carrot sticks, crackers, pretzels, cheese or fruit. Try to keep the sugar content down for less hyperactive kids. Choose juice boxes and water bottles instead of canned soft drinks.

Take CD's along with their favourite music, as well as family music that you can all sing together while travelling.

Make sure your child uses the bathroom at every opportunity--before leaving home, in the airport before getting on the plane, right after eating on the plane (the line-ups for the few bathrooms can mean a long wait), before getting on the bus to go to the hotel or a sight-seeing trip.

If going on a beach vacation or cruise, of course sun-tan lotion is a must, as well as hats and sunglasses. Also take a skin cream in case of sun-burn. Be sure to include fun bandages and a small first-aid kit. Include some tummy-pills such as Gravol for car/bus/airplane trips, and constipation or diarrhea medicine.

Another item to take along on your travels would be a history or fact book about the place you are visiting to keep the child involved. Play games asking them if they can find the historic site you are visiting in the book, or an eye-spy game locating various types or trees, flowers or birds. Even allowing them a kid-proof disposable camera for them to take their own pictures would be helpful in keeping the child interested.

Be sure the children have had enough rest before the journey. Tired kids are cranky kids. And limit their intake of exotic foods to prevent tummy problems. It is nice that children will try and enjoy different fruits in another country, but too much papaya or avocado can wreak havoc on even the most mature stomach.

Many resorts are child-friendly and these can be a family traveller’s best friend. These ‘geared-to-children’ places offer everything a child or parent could want, from child-centred snack bars (serving pizza, hamburgers and macaroni n’ cheese), kid-friendly swimming pools, special computer rooms, sports and activities, to group games (where children can interact with others in their own age group). Many of these family resorts also offer babysitting services that allow Mom and Dad some quiet time of their own.

Take along a special security blanket or teddy bear to make travelling not so frightening for younger children. Travel pillows, window-sun shades and a warm coverlet can increase the child’s comfort level when sleeping in a car or on a plane and reduce the travel blues.

Travelling with children doesn’t have to be a nightmare. With careful planning, plenty of rest and controlled activities, parents and children can enjoy vacationing together.

- Say strict NO to intimacy with strangers. Even hugging and formal kissing can invite infections and diseases. Do not even share utensils and utility devices.

Seniors Health Safety Tips for Travel

Women should take special care while using urinals. Women are more prone to urine infections while on travel by using shared toilets. If you are having menstrual periods, keep enough sanitary pads with you. You should also keep 1-2 re-usable menstrual pads. Keeper cup and tampons are good alternates to look upon, as they are easy to dispose. If you suffer from pains during menstruation, keep some painkillers for emergency use during menstruation. Air Travel Tips For Parents With Small Children

Air Travel Tips For Parents With Small Children
By: James Brown

[Word Count: 389 words] [Viewed: 17 time(s)]

Airline travel today is a lot different than it used to be, with new rules and regulations, as well as security alerts and procedures. For parents who are traveling with small children, air travel can be a nightmare if you are not careful. Not too long ago, Delta asked a mother to leave the plane because she was a mother and she was breast feeding her infant child. That was the woman's only crime but she was forced off the plane by Delta authorities because another passenger thought that a natural beautiful bond between parent and child was obscene. Apparently Delta agreed with the passenger who complained, because the mother was not allowed to take the flight.

In the current world today, parents can no longer depend on airline personnel to use common sense, because apparently some people just do not have any. If you are traveling with small children, there are some tips to follow to try and make your airline travel as hassle free as possible. There are rules and regulations concerning what is allowed in your carry on luggage, and the limit for liquids is two ounces. For formula and expressed breast milk, this limit does not apply and you can carry enough of these in your carry on bag to last for the duration of the flight. The breast milk or formula must be kept separate from the other carry on liquids, and you must declare to security personnel what the liquid is and why it is needed. The exception only applies to the maximum amount that could be needed for your travel, so you could not take four gallons of formula or expressed breast milk for a two hour flight.

For parents who have small children who still use diapers, most airport bathrooms have changing stations, and you may bring diapers as well as wipes, small bottles of lotion and baby oil, and any other necessary supplies. Just make sure that the bottles are two ounces or less, not bigger bottles that are half empty. If your child is a toddler, it is also a good idea to bring books and toys to amuse them. Ever since 9/11, security checkpoints are slow, and passengers must be at the airport hours early, so make sure that you have something to keep your child amused and happy.

Getting More From International Travel Guides And Deals

Getting More From International Travel Guides And Deals
By: Edwin John

[Word Count: 304 words] [Viewed: 10 time(s)]

The growing demand for international travel is a by-product of the extensive tourism efforts of many countries to draw tourists to visit their shores. This is evident in the mass distribution of pertinent travel literature by host countries at many overseas markets and exhibitions to sell their local attractions to potential tourists from all over the world, apart from lobbying with foreign embassies for the issuance of travel-friendly advisories.

The undeniable presence of travel agents and travel agencies in domestic markets has fast-tracked the promotion and sale of overseas destinations to locales who are enticed by discount travel rates, affordable tour packages, attractive locations and other vacation deals that are available at their choice destination. Apart from delivering regular sales functions, travel agencies assume the hustle and bustle related to overseas travel by providing premium services to all their clients. These services range from the booking of flights and hotel accommodation, securing of pertinent travel documents such as passports and visas, obtaining adequate travel insurance for the traveler and coordinating with overseas agencies in the case of packaged tours. Legitimate travel agencies are usually affiliated with an international network of travel agents to ensure that the traveler is better served from the moment he sets foot on the flight right to when it’s time to say goodbye.

Incidentally, major airlines have expanded their global destinations and likewise increased the frequency of flights between host countries to support relevant tourism objectives. The incidence of air travel is steadily on the rise each year and airline companies benefit much from economies of scale which allows them to offer more affordable flight packages.

All these developments prompted an upsurge of demand for international travel and flights from families and friends who wish to travel abroad for recreation, as well as from individuals on official business overseas..

Should You Get Travel Insurance From Boots?

Should You Get Travel Insurance From Boots?
By: Darlene Berkel

[Word Count: 436 words] [Viewed: 12 time(s)]

There are many reasons you could be taking a trip – perhaps for work, perhaps just a holiday to recharge your batteries and re-focus. There are lots of great places to see in the world, and so many things you can do on holiday, but remember to spend a while thinking about the practical things before you go. Boots travel insurance, for example, is worth considering to make sure that should things go wrong, you have something to fall back on.

The Costs Of Traveling
Taking a trip can be expensive – there are lots of things to spend money on, from hotels, to train fares and flights – and then you need spending money while you are away. These expenses quickly mount up and your holiday budget can be gone before you know it.

Since you are going to be spending so much money on traveling already, having Boots travel insurance is a great idea. No matter how much you are spending on your trip, and no matter how much your trip costs, once you spend money on something like a vacation, you don’t want to lose that money in any way. There are many ways that money you have already spent can be lost when you travel.

As an example – the hotel could be overbooked, or your flights could be canceled due to bad weather. In cases like those, if you do not have travel insurance, you could find yourself in serious trouble – just imagine having to pay walk-up fares for a hotel while you wait for the airline to sort out a new flight.

Many places have fees that you are going to have to pay if your trip is canceled and it is not your fault. If your airline ticket is bumped, or if you aren’t able to get into your hotel room for any reason, having Boots travel insurance could be the thing that saves your money.

What Does It Offer?
Boots travel insurance can be beneficial in a lot of ways. You can buy it just like most other policies – either in the store, or online, and then it will cover you should anything unfortunate occur while you are away.

If you have to pay for something unexpected – such as new reservations or a different hotel room, then the travel insurance will cover you. Should your baggage go missing, or you be robbed while you are on holiday, then Boots travel insurance will help you replace what you have lost, and get you your money back. You can count on Boots travel insurance to look after you while you are away.
